Hi social pro 👋
For years technology enthusiasts have watched Samsung, Xiaomi, and basically every other retailer fold their phones in half, wondering if Apple would ever follow suit.
Well, they finally have.
Last week Apple launched the iPhone Duo in a campaign that drove 17 million views and 12,000 comments on day one alone.
We ran those comments through Siftsy to find out what audiences actually thought of the launch in real time.
Let’s get into it 👇

From the feed: Apple launched the iPhone Duo - here's how the comments reacted
Apple’s iPhone launches are cultural events in their own right. But the Duo felt different from the moment it was announced.
This was John Ternus’ first major product launch as CEO, it was Apple’s long-awaited answer to a category their rivals had been building in for years, and at $1999 it was their most expensive iPhone ever.
Apple dropped a series of minimal videos to their TikTok page, leaning into the “foldable” novelty and taking a similar approach to the Gen Z inspired campaign that caught attention earlier this year.
Driving over 17 million views on its first day, the campaign could easily be considered a success. But when you dig into the comments, a more complicated story starts to unfold.

1. Audiences were interested…but not exactly impressed
For an Apple launch, the reaction is measured. 47.2% of comments are positive, but the content score sits at 5.7 (Favorable) rather than the kind of hyped up reception Apple typically generates for a new iPhone.
People like Apple, they're just not sure about this particular product yet. The Duo is generating genuine curiosity, but not the instinctive excitement that usually follows an iPhone announcement.

2. The price quickly became a meme
The price conversation accounts for 8% of comments and scores 4.9 - one of the most negatively charged topics across the campaign.
What made the jokes land harder than they might have is the context. Competitors’ comparable foldables come in significantly cheaper than Apple’s new offering, and the comment section knew that. Apple entering a category where the competition has spent years driving prices down meant the Duo’s price tag was being benchmarked against devices that already exist, that people already own, and that cost considerably less.
A much harder position to defend than launching a premium product in a category Apple already owns.

3. Apple vs Samsung took over
11% of comments are about Samsung - the most divided conversation in the dataset. Rather than generating excitement about the Duo, the launch instead triggered a proxy war between Apple and Samsung loyalists that played out across every post.
The conversation became less about whether the Duo was a good product and more about which company deserved credit for the foldable category. The launch got overshadowed by a brand debate that Apple didn’t start and quickly couldn’t control.

4. A small thread with a big signal
The Duo launches without Face ID, and a vocal minority noticed. They made up less than 1% of comments but generated a Siftsy Score of 3.7 - the most negative thread in the campaign - appearing across 3 of 5 comment sections.
The concern is practical: how does a $1999 phone handle banking apps and everyday authentication without the feature iPhone users have relied on since 2017?
It’s the kind of criticism that can get overshadowed by initial hype, but surfaces again when people are actually deciding whether to spend two grand on a product that’s lacking something crucial.
Apple launch the Duo into a market where foldables are still a niche product, making up less than 2% of global smartphone shipments.
Convincing people to try a new technology is hard enough. Convincing them to pay a premium price for it, from a brand that arrived late to the category, while a vocal corner of the comment section is actively making the case for the cheaper competitor…slightly more tricky.
The comment section on day one is rarely the final verdict, but it does set the tone.
